Tarform Luna: Helping to Power the Future of Tomorrow

Envisioning “a new breed of electric motorcycles,” Tarform founder and CEO, Taras Kravtchouk, created his design based on the belief that motorcycles should be powered by clean technology, upgradeable, clad in sustainable parts, and built to withstand the test of time. After an intense four-year prototype and development effort, Kravtchouk and his Brooklyn-based team of engineers, designers, and staff proudly revealed the Tarform Luna on September 1, 2020, at Classic Club Car in Manhattan, NY, and Newlab in Brooklyn Navy Yard.

The Luna is powered by an efficient 55-horsepower PMAC electric motor and Sevcon Gen 4 motor controller, and fed by a custom 11.8kWh lithium battery pack. Re-energizing duties of the Luna are handled by a 3.3kW onboard charger, along with a regenerative braking system.

Throughout development, the Electric Systems Design team at Flight Systems Industrial Products provided software tuning and overall control system configuration assistance to Tarform. Thanks to everyone’s efforts, the sleek, retro look of the Luna blurs from 0-60 mph in 3.8 seconds.

The concepts of designing for change and respecting nature are central to the ethos of Tarform. “Vehicles of tomorrow should be built to last, with the spirit of craftsmanship preserved. Vehicles should be built for upgradability and not obsolescence,” states Kravtchouk in a recent press release.

The bike is built on a modular platform that enables continuous upgradability of parts and aesthetic appearance. The hand-formed aluminum body is highlighted by 3-D-printed grills and composite panels made of a flaxseed weave composite. The motor cover is formed from a biodegradable cornstarch plastic, and the seat upholstery is a biodegradable vegan leather. Tarform also plans to use eco-friendly algae and iron-based metallic pigments in lieu of paint and primer.

The Luna is currently available in two versions, the Racer and the Scrambler. Whether on street or gravel, the ability to select one of three available drive modes ensures the proper power for the situation. If you’re looking for range, select ECO Mode and enjoy 120-mile range on a single charge. Select Cruise Mode for all-around riding and a happy medium of range versus performance. For maximum power, Pursuit Mode will propel the Luna from 0-60mph in 3.8 seconds.

The Luna has been performance tested on multiple surfaces, including a Mojave Desert adventure in December 2020.
