Lead-Acid Battery Maintenance

Proper battery maintenance starts at day 1, and here we’ll review some of the ways you can ensure you get the most life out of your batteries, which will ultimately save you both time and money.


Water, Water, Water…Most of the lead-acid batteries used today are flooded batteries, also called wet batteries. The water/acid mixture inside the battery is known as electrolyte, which is pivotal in how your battery works. The electrolyte should be covering the battery’s lead plates at all times. Exposing the lead plates to air is one of the leading causes of sulfation, which ultimately will cause poor battery performance and diminished capacity. When watering your batteries, it is important to know how much water to use, and at what times to add it. Prior to charging, there should be just enough water to cover the plates. Over watering before a charge cycle can cause the electrolyte to boil out and ultimately lose acid, causing a drop in the specific gravity. If you need to add additional water, do so only after fully charging the battery. Also, take note that using either distilled water or water from a water deionizing unit is pertinent, as tap water often has chemicals and minerals that can harm your battery.


Battery Sulfation Over Time

Clean and Neutralize…A clean battery actually can be a better performing battery. How many times have you seen corrosion build up on the outside of a battery and thought it was strictly cosmetic? Well, it turns out that corrosion actually increases self-discharge of the battery. Using an acid neutralizing spray to clean up corroded areas not only promotes a clean appearance, but will help in preventing self-discharge. Using a wire brush on the terminals helps to ensure the best possible connection.
